I hope your summers are going well; we've been keeping busy here at Theory HQ. The whole crew's been making amazing art and making big things happen, which has really been the goal of Theory all along. Well, that and sharing it with all you awesome people ;-)

Speaking of which, we're all really looking forward to this Saturday night at the Leopard Lounge. This Saturday night is the premiere of our Soundclash Theory format, where we set up two DJs/DJ groups with a theme to spin on and two 1.5 hour sets, back and forth so everybody gets some early time and some later time on the decks. It's definitely not a battle, more like a bit of friendly competition between DJs who've enjoyed one anothers' work, with the only metric of success being how much all of you are feeling it.

To start off strong, this Saturday we've asked our veteran Theory resident DJs It's Overture and 100dBs to each take us around the world in 80 minutes, mixing domestic club bangers with less-known (but no less bumpin') international tracks in what's sure to be an evening to remember. Actually, since we've got fresh-mixed $6 mojitos all night, you might not remember the evening at all.

Adding to the international madness, we'll also be hosting the US premiere performance from VJs Lau+1 this Saturday night- Lau+1 are a couple of amazing visual artists from Holland who'll be projecting live visualizations all night, bringing styles that have only been seen in Dutch clubs like Odeon to the Leopard Lounge for our enjoyment. Expect some big things.

Like all Theory parties, our Soundclash Theory jam this Saturday night at the Leopard Lounge is free to the 21+ public. Unlike the Theory Prom, which jampacked both the upstairs Leopard Lounge and the downstairs Sin Sin, this Saturday is going to be a more low-key upstairs-only party. We've found that managing multiple rooms is a big pain in the ass, and it keeps us the Theory event producers from hanging out with all y'all as much as we'd like, so we're trying the one-room thing and publicizing this one a bit less than the last.

On the whole, this Saturday night is going to be amazing; a free party featuring great music, cool international art and cheap good cocktails in an awesome space. Hope to see you there!

'sup party people?

Theory HQ is still packed with banners and disco balls and such from the recent New York Dance Parade, but even among the clutter we're rolling out a party too big for one club to hold this weekend: Theory Prom 2008, Saturday May 31st at Leopard Lounge and Sin Sin:

The front mosaic (left side) is all pictures from our past parties, and the back mosaic (right side) is all art from our past shows.

2 floors of great music, amazing art, fancy dress, prom photos and all sorts of interesting people from the Dance Parade in addition to all of the usual sexy suspects- this party's going to be our best yet. 21+, of course.

Come early for special surprises and a 9pm to 11pm drink special on ground level at Sin Sin and 10-11 upstairs at the Leopard Lounge- $6 Absolut Cocktails and $4 domestic bottles- then stay late for the 1am to 2am late happy hour on both floors, same great deal.

The dress for the evening is East Village Black Tie, and if you're wondering what that means, well, so are we ;-) We'll all find out on 5/31.

Music-wise, Sin Sin (the ground floor) will be more top 40 oriented, while the Leopard Lounge (upstairs) will house some more far-out sounds.

Due to a scheduling conflict, both the Sin Sin Artcrime Photo Retrospective *and* the Leopard Lounge Artcrime Mixed Media Retrospective Digital Art Shows will be curated by Meg Rorison.

If anyone asks you for a password, it's "Theory Events." Rep it.

Hiya!

If you're coming here from BoingBoing, welcome! Theory Events is an arts collective based in the east village. We throw free parties that showcase groundbreaking local art and music, and we are all deeply committed to making NYC a better and culturally richer place each day.

Now seriously, the vast majority of the NYPD are amazing, kind and heroic people, truly New York's finest, but the bad apples in the bunch, be they corrupt, overzealous or simply incompetent, make the entire city look bad. All we're saying is that the NYPD needs to take a note from the comic books and understand that with great power comes great responsibility. When officers' conduct in the line of duty is so outrageous as to shock New Yorkers, accountability must be called for.

Oh, and if you'd like to lock any of us up for saying this, we've got nine friends who say you can't. Take that, haters.

And so, with our First Amendment Cred established, on to business...

100dBs and Ryan-O'Neil spent Saturday in the lab, mixing records and writing rhymes to express their feelings about the Sean Bell verdict. The resulting mix featuring Ryan's 2008 update of the classic Dre/Snoop (and later Fat Joe) banger "Deep Cover" is free for listening or mp3 download at 100dBs.com.

On a less topical but nonetheless somewhat political tip, mashup monsters It's Overture have continued their genre-bending ascent into freeform fair use with their new 45 minute mix, The Magnificent Dance. All I can say is it starts out with a mash of Mos Def, Todd Terje and The Clash and gets wilder from there. The Magnificent Dance is available for free download from It's Overture's deceptively modest web outpost.

By the way, Voidstar's live set at our March party at midway's still blowing our minds. It's still available for free download, if you're into transgressive, groundbreaking live electronic remixes and mashups.

The Theory Crew's been going to and fro around NYC, searching out awesome people and inviting them to hang out with us this Saturday night at Midway. Our journeys have led us to...

-paintball redecorating sessions for retail spaces

...and in all of these places, plus innumerable bars, lounges, restaurants and record stores, we've found a bunch of really cool artists, musicians and mad geniuses that we want to introduce you to. Come through this Saturday and meet some sexy strangers!

Hey Everybody,
You're all cordially invited to party with us at Theory's first Event of 2008,
ARTCRIME5: FAIR USE, Groundhog's Saturday February 2 at China1.

First Thing's First, your DJ's for the evening:

Upstairs on street level, 100 dBs and Theory newcomer Scallywag will be tag teaming to drop the best hip-hop, reggae, soul and funk that you've never heard from 10pm-close.

Downstairs, after an opening two hours of deep house and breaks from our very own 5-foot house-sassin Nefarious, It's Overture and their Monster Squad cohort Massive G will drop an unrelenting 5-hour set blending house, pop and hip-hop into something we can't quite describe, but can't stop shaking our asses to. So what's up with the title?

ARTCRIME5: FAIR USE will be a celebration of fair use in art and music with two floors of fair-using DJs, multiple digital installations of fair use art and mobs of clubgoers ready to make some fair use of one another.

Fair use is the legal defense for works of art that use copyrighted material in order to drive progress in the arts. In today's remixed, mashed, chopped and screwed artistic culture, some of the most exciting works of art and music use parts of prior works juxtaposed with one another as building blocks for entirely new works, and still other exciting artworks reference prior works by parody or criticism. The possibilities are only as large as the imaginations of the artists and the breadth of human experience to date. Does that get you a bit hot and bothered too?

What About The Art Submissions?

We'll be accepting still and video art that either employs fair use or is fair-use themed for inclusion in the installations through Wednesday, January 30 at 8pm, and this is a hard deadline. We will finalize the installations at 8:15pm that night. There will be no extensions.Submissions should be hi-res image or movie files, preferably jpegs and mpegs, with still art captioned in-image with artist's name and the work's title. If you do not caption your works, you will only receive artist attribution on program sheets displayed throughout the venue, organized in order of appearance. Unless otherwise specified by the artist, submissions will be used for digital display only and for one night only, Saturday February 2nd, and will not be used by Theory Events or The Venue for any other purposes. All submissions should be e-mailed to theoryeventsnyc@gmail.com.

Please specify whether you'd allow us to show your art for promotional purposes on theoryevents.com in your submission e-mail. If you don't say anything about other uses, then we won't make other use of it. If you let us use your art on our website, it will be attributed and shown to at least hundreds of people. In-image captioning is strongly recommended for works that you will allow us to show online. Some early submissions will be preview posted on the theory events website, with permission of course. We'll also be hosting zero-commission print and merch sales at our merch table, noted above, so tell us if you can bring some reasonably-sized (under 2 feet square, as a rule of thumb) works that you'd like us to put on sale for you.Because of the theme, we're cutting all restrictions on number of submissions. If you think your work might be appropriate but aren't sure, send it in!

If you'd like to learn more about fair use, help us hone the pamphlet we'll have at the merch table by asking us all them tricky questions.

Theory Events: The Year In Review

It’s been quite a year for Theory and our affiliated artists; by year’s end, Theory will have put on a total of 15 free parties this year, an even dozen of which were open to the public. Over those 15 events, we’ve exhibited works by over three dozen up-and-coming artists and hosted performances by over a dozen bands, DJs and MCs. Here’s what some of our individual artists have been up to recently:

-Following the critically acclaimed release of 100dBs and Ryan O’Neil’s debut album “The Adventures of The One Hand Bandit and The Slum Computer Wizard,” 100dBs went on to release his also-acclaimed Aphex Blends and his brilliant Ghetto Blaster Mix for free download from 100dBs.com. We hear you can buy the album at his site too, and it makes a great stocking stuffer for the hip-hop fan in your life.

-When not at work on his forthcoming studio projects, dBs is also starting a new free monthly party called “Rhythm Shower” at Supreme Trading in Williamsburg this Thursday December 20, and forecasts call for awesome.

-Theory Photog Meg Rorison has shot at most of our events and has also had her work shown by a number of galleries. When we can’t keep her busy enough, she’s also been stepping out to shutterbug around town for Urb Magazine.

-DJs Macabee and Verse of It’s Overture and DJ/Producer Voidstar have been cooking up all manner of new goodies in preparation for their upcoming performance, mixtape and podcast projects; expect big things from all of them in ’08.

- That same DJ Macabee of It’s Overture and your humble narrator are currently putting the finishing touches on a paper we co-authored critiquing the current state of the copyright law on sampling. We made some pretty solid discoveries, and we’ll be shopping the finished paper around to journals for publication in the New Year.

-When he’s not hustling for Theory, our behind-the-scenes stalwart Ashir Gruder’s been all over your TV sets, showing off his peeling techniques and platings for the Food Network and AP’ing everything from judge shows to A&E Biography.

-My own poetry publisher, the scrappy and charming Destructible Heart Press, as helmed by the scrappy and charming Adam Rubinstein, who performed at our April Niagara show, continues apace with their growth and expansion, sending some of their new offerings into contention for the prestigious Pushcart Prize for excellence in small press publications. - Professor Meat continues to rock mics and break minds out in Boulder, Co. He’s been selling stunning amounts of mixtapes and the new novel he’s writing is nothing short of excellent. He’ll be back in town for the holidays, and you can check him out at our Jew’s Night Out show, “Nuthin’ But A Jew Thang,” Christmas Eve at China1.
