Exclusive:

Remember that exclusive promo mix that we told you about yesterday? The one where mashup masters It's Overture touch the beats and acapellas from 100 dBs and Ryan O'Neil's album "The Adventures of the One Hand Bandit and Slum Computer Wizard," mixing them seamlessly with rare, classic hip hop? Click on the pic below to listen to the mix, it's that fire:

As with all of that good crack, it's free to listen, but if you want to cop the mix for yourself, come to the release party and cop one of the first 50 copies of dBs' and Ryan's album to get a bonus copy of the mix. The album's ten bucks, the party's free and there'll be a $20 open bar from 9-11, with a first listen to the album at 10 and top shelf wilding all night. It's Overture will be holding it down on the decks from 1am to close, by the way.

Too much awesome... on location at the Overture Lab

(front-->back: Voidstar Runner, Macabee, Verse at the Overture Lab)

Anybody who's been to a Theory party can tell you that DJs Macabee and Verse of It's Overture bring wild new mashups and custom remixes to their every set, but I'm playing fly on the wall right now to the creative process that gives birth to the incredible genre-bending tracks that fill their private crates.

The Overture Lab is remarkably spartan origin for the big sounds that come out of it; two technics, a pioneer cd turntable, a cdr recorder and a laptop running serato, all facing a white wall adorned with some small pieces of art. Crates of meticulously arranged vinyls ring the room, and a set of high quality monitors blend into the amiable clutter of books and 80's action figures on the shelves.

(L-->R: Macabee, 100 dBs and Verse in the booth at Antique.)

As I watch, Macabee and Verse are putting the finishing touches on an exclusive promo mix for their friend 100 dBs' record release party, and they're mixing up some amazing things. Before upgrading to the Serato system, Macabee and Verse had kept legal pads of tracks organized by bpm, but even working on their newly streamlined digital setup they maintain a distinctively craftsmanlike air.

They move over the turntables like a single man with four hands, dropping exclusive beats by 100 dBs over unconventional acapellas and scratching verses by MC Ryan O'Neil over unexpected and funky instrumentals and hooks. It's corny to report, but it's true: the magic is happening. Their three hour set this Saturday night is going to be something to see, because these guys are making it look easy as hell right now...

(100 dBs and Ryan O'Neil)

This Saturday, by the way, is going to be insane. In honor of the release of "The Adventures of the One Hand Bandit and Slum Computer Wizard", the owners of the China1 Antique Lounge have graciously let us have an absurdly awesome $20 open bar from nine to eleven p.m. There's still no cover for the party, but props to the whole China1 Antique lounge team for giving us a cheap way to celebrate in high style this Saturday Night. We'll be doing the listening party for the album at 10 while screening a photo retrospective of the night's featured artists as part of a special edition of the Galleryless Gallery, with DJs and live performances for the rest of the night in the palatial lounge itself. As for the promo mix, the first 50 people to cop dBs' and Ryan O'Neil's new album at the release party will get a copy of the mix for no additional charge, white label style.

Hit us up at TheoryEventsNYC@gmail.com for reservations (for people we don't know) and guestlisting (for people we do); the evening's already filling up, and this one is not to be missed.

the boom bap:

rolling with the new:

The scene in and around NYC rewards hustle. Musicians and artists who come with the same material again and again are pushed off the market by those who roll with the new. But again, novelty for its own sake is just as lame as what you've heard a million times before, so actual innovation is the constant blessing that we live with, artists striving hard to top one another and, more importantly, to top themselves.

That's where 100 dBs and Ryan O'Neil come in.

Barely six months after the release of 100 dBs' excellent mixtape Brenner's Breaks, the Slum Computer Wizard and One Hand Bandit are back at it again with a new album so fresh that I can't even really adequately praise it on paper, except to say that I'm blown away by how incredibly good it is. No hype, no bullshit, the album is a masterpiece, and it's dropping exactly one week from today.

So Saturday August 25th, join the Theory Crew as we celebrate dBs' and Ryan's album release at the Antique Lounge at China1. The party's free as always, and the men of the hour will be giving the early crowd an exclusive first public listen to the album at 10pm sharp. In honor of the record dropping, China1 will be discounting their delicious signature cocktails to half price from 9pm until the end of the album around 11. After that there'll be some great DJ's bringing that new shit until way late, and as always when Theory's in the building, great new art in the galleryless gallery.

wow

We're not sure if we found the New Punk Rock last night, but we did party really hard and leave the crowd begging for more. Big props to Ra Ra Rasputin, who were indeed a very tough act to follow, love to High Class Elite for following them just the same and bringing some star power to the evening, respect to the Theory Residents for holding it down in the late night and so much thanks to Justin, Seth and Russ for showing such amazing art in the Gallery.

That makes two insanely successful parties in a week; we were originally planning on taking the weekend off, but then 100 dBs had to go and get a 6 hour set at China1 this Saturday. Come check him out after 10! No cover, an awesome new menu (Kobe beef sliders, anyone?) and that same China1 Antique Lounge magic, still to be found at 50 Avenue B between 3rd and 4th streets.

Thanks again to everyone who came out and everyone who helped out last night, and most of all to the Antagonist Movement for letting us play with their toys for the evening!

Cheers,
Theory

The Theory-tested, Antagonist Movement Approved Game Plan for tonight:

1. Check out the pictures from our last party.

2. Check out The High Class Elite's myspace and realize we've got burgeoning superstars playing tonight for FREE.

3. Check out Ra Ra Rasputin in action and question whether High Class Elite can follow them.

4. peep someof the awesome art that we'll be showing tonight.

5. Try to imagine what it's like to get dirty with the Theory set.

6. Realize that you can't know the half unless you're there.

7. Call up a couple of your friends and tell them that you're going to Niagara tonight at 7th and A, and that they should come with you.

8. Be there when we find

Thursday is the new Friday...

but what is The New Punk Rock?

Find out with us Thursday... I mean, The New Friday.

Start to finish, it's going to be a hell of a show:

-Ra Ra Rasputin rock so hard we're worried they may hurt themselves. Don't take our word, peep it on youtube, then come to Niagara tomorrow and get down.

-High Class Elite glitter so hard our eyes hurt just looking at them. With 17,000+ myspace friends and a gig at Lollapalooza, this is officially your chance to catch them before they're huge, free of charge.

-It's Overture have been putting together a twisted mix of punk, new wave, hip-hop and various parts of the kitchen sink for tomorrow night, stop in and hear the newness.

-you may ask yourself, "what does a hip-hop producer like 100 dBs know about punk rock?"
the answer: more than you do. check out the argyle album and be ashamed of yourself for ever doubting mans.

-also, awesome art by Seth Joseph, Russ Spitkovsky and Justin Sanz

All this, all free to the 21+ public, with $3 rheingolds all night.

Punk is Dead. Tomorrow night, see what's next. theoryevents.com
